Ebola in Uganda, tension in Kenya
There has been an ebola outbreak in Uganda and interestingly enough it’s not in the news. I have friends (who have other friends there) who have been directly affected.
And have you heard about Kenya? There has been a lot of unrest and killings over election results. Hundreds (if not many more) have died. This one is in the news, at least.
Romania is a relatively peaceful country. But how many people read about the rioting and national referendum in an attempt to impeach President Basescu last May? Or about the ethnic tensions between Italians and Romanians and Roma in Italy a few months ago?
It’s interesting what we find interesting enough to capture our attention. I fall into it too . . . there are just days when I don’t want to hear about another war or more people being killed unjustly or dying from a disease in the midst of a lack of proper medical materials. But what happens when everyday is a day when Britney Spears’ latest antics are more newsworthy than hundreds and thousands of people dying somewhere else in the world?
The most searched for term that people use to end up on my blog is “haircut.” I mentioned getting my hair cut six months ago. I still get a regular supply of visitors apparently looking for the perfect haircut. Not that I’m saying that my blog should be attracting readers by its newsworthy topics, but it is interesting what we search for in this world. When will we find what we’re searching for?
By the way, if you’re interested in Uganda and Kenya, click on some of the links to the right and see what they have to say (Alida, Bethany, and the Ironsides are very close, but others including the Pagels also talk about it – they also have links to more news). Search around. The stories are out there if you look for them.

I have a class (Emerging Infectious Diseases) that is talking about the Ebola outbreak right now, and another class (Human Rights Seminar) that has been dealing a lot with how unaware we often are of humanitarian emergencies and human rights violations around the world. I know that I am often not aware as I should be. My blogger friend David just made a good point about what Americans consider to be newsworthy in his article about Heath Ledger. http://perpetualanticipation.blogspot.com/2008/01/heath-ledger.html
Regarding the situation between the Roma, Romanians, and Italians, I doubt I would have heard anything about it if I didn’t have a particular interest. So for anyone who is interested, this group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Romanian_Roma/ is a good source for information and current news related to the Roma. They send out email updates in English and Romanian. IF you are interested in Roma human rights issues, this is a good group to join.
Thanks, Melany! Both of those classes sound great! I also had to laugh because as a result of my run-in with the dog, I got to spend time in the “Infectious diseases” section of the hospital here.
Thanks for including the links too; I really enjoy reading well written and interesting blogs and being more informed about Romania (in all of its details)
No fun…! How is that healing up???
