Who I am
I’m twenty-five, have a bachelor’s degree in sociology, and come from a tourist town on the shore of Lake Michigan. I lived and worked in Romania with the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC) until November 2008. Now I’m hanging out in my sister and brother-in-law’s basement in New Hampshire. But my story is a whole lot longer than that.
Longer version:
My parents didn’t know they were having twins until a week before my brother and I were born, so they had to buy a new car. I grew up in a big house with a sister and three brothers, my parents, a bunch of cats, a dog, and a whole variety of different animals at different times.
I was home-schooled, lived with a science lab in the basement, no television, and thousands of books, but managed to be a well-adjusted social being in spite of all that.
I became a Christian around age seven mostly because I wanted to go to heaven if I died. It wasn’t until I was sixteen, after a series of tragic accidents in my town resulted in me hating God, that I realized that faith isn’t so focused on me. At that point I realized that God was calling me to him, and that a relationship doesn’t happen where there is only hate and mistrust from one side.
During college I worked as a camp counselor to inner city kids from North Philly, an English teacher to high school students in Eastern Europe, and in a glamour shop for dogs catering to people who didn’t think twice about paying hundreds of dollars for doggie bikinis, purfume, and carriers. I also spent a semester ’studying’ in Hungary (read: every weekend friends and I used our food allowance to travel all over Eastern and Central Europe). This interesting combination of experiences led to a few things: I began to study sociology and loved it, I never wanted to be rich, and I wanted to serve God however or wherever he might lead me.
I wasn’t too happy at first when he led me to Arkansas. After I had graduated from college, I had packed everything that would fit into my 1990 Lincoln Town Car and went back to work at camp in Pennsylvania. At the end of the summer, my car was dead, and God was loudly hinting that I should go to Arkansas to work for City Year (an AmeriCorps program). I wasn’t too happy about it but I went anyway.
After two months of sleeping on random floors and couches, having my car (a Saturn this time) die repeatedly and then be broken into, I finally had a roommate and an apartment. The roommate was great! The apartment wasn’t so great . . . but I survived. I spent the year as a literacy intervention tutor in one of Little Rock’s inner city elementary schools as well as co-starting a community involvement program for junior high students. At the end of my term in June, 2006, I sadly bid farewell to Arkansas and all of my friends there.
God was leading me to Romania, where I had dreamed of living since I was about thirteen. I received an internship through the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC) to learn and become involved in holistic Christian community development. I was there from September, 2006, until November, 2008. I lived in an old communist bloc apartment – like the majority of Romanians in Bucharest – rode public transportation, went to the market regularly, and volunteered with a crisis pregnancy center and a maternal center.
Now I’m living in my sister and brother-in-law’s basement in New Hampshire, acting as pseudo nanny to my almost-two-year-old nephew and newborn (March 5, 2009!) niece. I play in a ragtag community orchestra, knit socks, am trying to find some friends who like climbing mountains, and drive a car that has a check-engine light that keeps coming on.
I have become passionate in becoming a follower of Jesus and not just a “Christian,” holistic Christian community development, justice, peace, love, human trafficking, living in inner cities, Romania, Romanian, Romanians, and mountain climbing, among other things.

Hi! I will be visiting Romania in two weeks for 12 days. It was supposed to be a mission trip but the team bailed on me. So I am going back (went in 92,93, and 1994). Want to meet missionaries there and see firsthand how I can be involved (either going, sending, definitely praying). If you want to e-mail me back, I’d be very interested in seeing the work the CRWRC is doing in Romania.
Multumesc,
Jeff Taylor
Hello Sharon! I’m a friend of your Fathers (earthly and heavenly). I met your Dad while he visited the Nuclear plant down in Phoenix. We had a couple of nice chats about God and how he works through surrendered hearts and the passion that He instills in areas such as writing, music etc. His book “Heavens to Louie” was a welcome blessing for me that caused me to laugh and cry and most importantly to know that Jesus is beside me and more than willing to share the yoke of this life if I will allow him to. Your Dad let me read some of your writing and gave me this address. I pray that you will be blessed and be a blessing, in the Name of Christ, to those who He puts in your path. May you be protected from the evil of this world and shine to light the Way for the lost!
Be careful for nothing… – George Mueller once said to care is good, but to foster care is sinful. I suspect that he had recently read Philippians 4…
Blessings in Christ,
Wayne
Bmis,
I was moved by your comments on the Ron Paul piece and could not agree with you more, other than the fact that I’m a RP supporter. I encourage you to read this short piece “The Socialist Case for Ron Paul” by Christian socialist, Jeil Schalkwijk (Netherlands).
http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/lewrw/archives/016107.html
He explains how Paul’s philosophy of freedom is good for people of all political persuasions; Democrats, Socialists, Greens and even Communists. He provides answers here for social liberals who believe they can’t support RP for one reason or another. He explains here how a Paul presidency will not only be best for the US, but for the world as well.
this inspired piece “Endorsing Evil” by historian Becky Akers was also brilliant

Hello Sharon: I’m a pastor in Iowa who stumbled onto your blog today, and was riveted to the spot by the words Buna Ziua. I have been to Romania twice (98 and 00), the first time with a group from my church and the second with my son (who passed thru again later, on the way to Moldova). We were only there for a couple of weeks each time, but fell in love with the country and our wonderful hosts. The church/facility was called Centru Nazareneanul. We also spent some time in Sighisoara, where Nazarene Bible College has an extension program. Several of our Romanian friends have visited us in Iowa.
My host pastor-friend in Bucharest was from Ploiesti, and his wife was from one of the cities on the Hungarian border; I can confirm the cultural sparks that fly between the two ethnic groups!
Another dear friend travels Romania, mostly to pray. She’s from California, and serves as an independent missionary. Her website is Adventure Grammy Jolean. I think she lives in Constanta, but her last entry is from Mangalia. I remember being in Sinaia (I saw your post) and shopping in the great plaza in Brasov.
Anyway, just a hello and I’m glad you’re there, and may God richly bless your work!
Best wishes!
Monte Asbury

They walk several miles each day, providing motorcycles or bicycles will help the missionary with his ministry and family chores. We are committed to making disciples through partnering with local churches to renew, train and mobilize believers the life and work of a local pastor or missionary in Pakistan is much different from that of a similar position in the western world. The Pakistan is the 3rd largest mission field in the world only 97% Muslims, 1.5% Hindus and 1.5% are Christian, which also means that 97% of Pakistani does not yet know that Jesus Christ died and rose for their sins! How tragic! Many Missionaries don’t have an own vehicle they do not have a proper transportation they walk several miles each day, carrying tracts and supplies on their shoulder bag.
